Knowing What to Expect Can Make It Easier
For many families, part of the anxiety around this day comes simply from not knowing what will actually happen. Understanding the general shape of a home visit — what Alina does, how long it takes, and what's asked of you — often brings real relief, even before the day itself arrives.
Every appointment is a little different, and Alina will always explain each step as it happens, at your pace. This is simply a general guide to what most families can expect.
Preparing the Home
There's very little you need to do to prepare. A quiet, comfortable spot your pet already knows — their bed, a favourite blanket, or even the sofa — is usually best. Some families like to keep the room simple; others gather photos, light a candle, or have a favourite toy nearby. There's no right way to prepare — whatever feels most like your family.
Can My Family Be Present?
Yes. As many family members as you'd like — including children, if you feel it's right for them — are welcome to be there. Some families prefer to say their goodbyes beforehand and step outside; others want to be present for every moment. Alina will support whatever your family chooses.
Can My Other Pets Be Present?
Many owners choose to let other pets in the household be nearby, as it can help them understand what has happened rather than simply noticing their companion has disappeared. This is entirely your choice, and Alina is happy to talk through what might suit your household.
The General Process
When Alina arrives, she'll spend time with you and your pet first — answering any questions and making sure everyone feels ready. There is never any rush.
The process itself is typically gentle and takes place in two calm stages: first, a sedative to help your pet relax fully and drift into a deep, peaceful sleep in your arms or on their bed; then, once your pet is fully settled, a final medication is given quietly. Throughout, you're welcome to hold, stroke, and talk to your pet exactly as you would at any other time.
The precise clinical details are something Alina is always happy to explain fully during your phone call or on the day — every family's questions are welcome, however small.
Taking Your Time to Say Goodbye
There's no fixed time limit on the appointment. Most visits last around an hour in total, but you and your family are welcome to take as long as you need — before, during, and afterwards.
What Happens Afterwards
Once your pet has passed peacefully, Alina will give you as much time alone with them as you'd like. When you're ready, she'll gently talk you through the aftercare options available — individual or communal cremation, keepsakes, and how ashes are returned — with absolutely no pressure to decide anything immediately.
